Digital Transformation in Rural Business: Lessons from Marumpa

Modernizing agribusiness requires more than just tools; it requires a shift in governance. A study from Marumpa village demonstrates how targeted training can transform local business efficiency.

Introduction

Many rural enterprises face a common challenge: significant agricultural potential coupled with sub-optimal economic performance. This is often rooted in outdated management practices and a lack of digital presence.

This article examines a community-based approach to strengthening local economies, drawing on insights published in the journal Community (DOI: 10.51878/community.v7i1.16531).

What the study examined

According to the abstract, the study focused on Marumpa Village in Maros Regency, where Village-Owned Enterprises (BUMDes) manage chili cultivation and duck farming. The primary goal was to address managerial limitations and the absence of separate financial records.

The research team aimed to determine if intensive training in business governance and digital marketing adoption could reduce the community's dependency on local middlemen.

Findings and interpretation

According to the abstract, the program yielded a 38.70% increase in participants' comprehension, with average scores rising from 49.60 to 88.30 upon completion of the training.

Tangible deliverables included standardized cash bookkeeping templates, formalized organizational structures, and the launch of social media profiles and digital catalogs, providing a foundation for long-term growth.

Methodology and limitations

The initiative took place from July 12 to July 26, 2025, involving 25 participants including BUMDes management and farmers. The intervention utilized focus group discussions and 16 hours of technical mentoring.

It is important to note that this analysis is based solely on the provided abstract. The study does not detail long-term market impacts or the specific challenges faced during the transition to digital sales channels.

WEBU practical proposal

For small business owners, we recommend starting with basic financial bookkeeping, as highlighted in the study. Without clear separation of business cash flow, digital marketing efforts may lead to unmonitored losses.

Leverage social media to build direct relationships with customers. Creating a simple digital product catalog is a practical first step to bypass middlemen and capture more value directly from the market.

Conclusion

The study confirms that education in management and digital tools is essential for the professionalization of rural enterprises. A nearly 40% gain in competency scores underscores the value of human capital investment.

Success in the digital space requires a combination of technical adoption and disciplined business processes, ensuring that digital growth is supported by sustainable internal operations.
